Zach’s Running Blog: Lobos vs. UTA 11/8/25

We are back in The PIT for the second game of the season for the Lobos (1-0) as they are set to host UT Arlington (1-0). The Lobos are coming off a a 22-point win on Wednesday against East Texas A&M, as both High School Freshmen guards (Jake Hall and Uriah Tenette) scored 14 points in their College debuts. Also, of note, Tomislav Buljan grabbed 15 rebounds in his college debut. The Lobos are looking to find a complete game early in the season, they did hit 40% of their 3’s on Wednesday, but only attempted 20, which will likely be on the low end of the attempts they have this season. UTA is coming off  a 51-point win over UNT Dallas an NAIA school in Dallas. We will get a better idea of how good UTA is early in this game. I will be updating this as the game goes along, as well as Twitter and Bluesky. I hope you follow along.

As we wait for the start of the game, I have to say that it is awesome for these games to be on the MW Network and Altitude, giving Robert Portnoy and Hunter Greene games on TV (just like football), and giving Daniel Faris and today JJ Buck, air time on the radio. I hope that this becomes the norm with the new media right deal, for games that aren’t on National TV.

Starters for the Lobos today: 6’3 Deyton Albury, 6’4 Jake Hall, 6’6 Chris Howell, 6’8 Antonio Chol, 6’9 Tomislav Buljan.

This is also a look back at history. UTA used to play in Texas Hall, which they played on a stage, UNM with Danny Granger played there back during the great 2004-2005 season, before he went on and starred in the NBA.

We are about set for the game. Lobos will be wearing their white uniforms, while UTA will be wearing their black uniforms. We are underway.

Sloppy start to this game. Took a few possessions for both teams to score.

17:38 1H: UTA 4 Lobos 2. Quick timeout for Coach Olen.

Deyton Albury with the last 4 points for the Lobos.

15:49 1H: Lobos 6 UTA 4.

12:30 1H: Lobos 8 UTA 7. Only one 3 so far today, and that was for UTA.

Deyton Albury is going to shoot so many Free Throws this year, his quickness is going to create a lot of reaching. Antonio Chol is creating issues for UTA on defense. Defense creating offense as Chol get a steal and dunk, and Albury follows with a steal and layup. That is fun basketball, and leads to an UTA TO.

8:31 1H: Lobos 16 UTA 8.

7:30 1H: Lobos 16 UTA 8. Tenette just picked up foul number 2, and the ref had a weird way of calling that foul.

Lobos hit their first 3 of the game, as JT Rock hits the open look from the top of the key. JT Rock with 5 big points, but has picked up 3 first half fouls.

3:23 1H: Lobos 26 UTA 13.

Chol with a big 3, Tenette with a buzzer beater that had serious shades of Jaelen House.

Halftime: Lobos 31 UTA 19. It wasn’t pretty shooting for the Lobos, but they were able to get to the foul line, and in transition to get their offense going a little. Defense created a lot of issues for UTA. 9 steals in the first half for the Lobos.

Jake Hall with his first 3 of the game, he adds a 2 FTs for his first 5 points of the game. Buljan with 5 points, including a poster, and an and1 with a FT to come.

16:00 2H: Lobos 41 UTA 25.

Buljan has been really good for the Lobos in the second half. Great job of making the right reads in the post, and waiting for the defender to make the move. Solid start to the 2H for the Lobos.

11:45 2H: Lobos 50 UTA 32. Lobos will be in the bonus for the rest of the game, and will have a 1-1 after the TO.

7:42 2H: Lobos 63 UTA 40. Albury will have 2 FTs after the TO. Solid game for the Lobos, when they haven’t shot the ball well from deep. Defense is still creating havoc, which is awesome to see.

6:24 2H: Lobos 67 UTA 41. Defense has remained stellar with better offensive flow (even with fouls).

3:58 2H: Lobos 69 UTA 48. Lobos will look to close this game well after a couple of lackluster minutes, but this game is all but done.

Final: Lobos 74 UTA 56. Lobos move to 2-0 on the season and will host UC Riverside on Tuesday.
