Zach’s Running Blog: Lobos vs. CSU 11/15

We are back at University Stadium for a massive game for the Coach Jason Eck led Lobos (6-3, 3-2) as they host Colorado State (2-7,  1-4) who are limping into the offseason which will also include a new Head Football Coach. Reminder that it has been a very long time since the Lobos have beaten the Rams in Football, still remains one of the weird streaks in sports. If the Lobos want to keep their Mountain West Conference Championship hopes alive they need to win this game. The Lobos play insanely well in Las Vegas before the bye game against UNLV to put themselves in this position. I will be updating this as the game goes along, as well as updates on Twitter and Bluesky. Here’s to a fun day of Lobo Sports.

Last win for the Lobos in this series in Football, was November 21st, 2009. It was one of only two wins of a certain coach at UNM. I remember that game having insane twist and turns, as the Lobo Basketball team was hosting a MTE.

Coin Toss Results:  CSU wins the toss and will defer to the second half. Important first drive coming up for the Lobos.

Lobos will start their day at the 25. Bad incompletion, and a 5 yard run by Bankston sets up a 3rd and 5 for the Lobos. Lobos will have to punt after an incompletion on the third down play.

CSU will start their day at their 26. A completion and a pair of first down runs for the Rams has their drive moving. First big 3rd and 5 coming up for CSU at the +44. DPI will keep the drive alive for the Rams. They went for gold on that 3rd down play. Massive sack for the Lobos that forces CSU to punt. Weird that CSU didn’t take a delay of game to give their punter more room. The punt goes into the end zone for a touchback.

9:06 1Q: Lobos 0 CSU 0. Lobos will start their next drive from their 20. Bankston with the first 1st down of the game for the Lobos, but nothing else doing for the Lobos. The punt will have CSU at their 27.

4:18 1Q: Lobos 0 CSU 0. Great awareness by Jack Layne to stay behind the LOS and find Johnson for the massive gain. Lobos just missed a massive play on the 3rd down play, and the Lobos will have to punt again. Huge drop by the Lobos. CSU will have their next drive start at their 4, after a nice punt.

CSU with a couple of short plays to get out away from the goal line, and will have a 3rd and 5 from their 9. Fumble snapped and the Lobos get the stop. CSU with a great bounce on the punt and it will push the Lobos back to the 29.

End of 1Q: Lobos 0 CSU 0. Lobos will have a 2nd and 2 after the TO. Lobos fumble the first play of the 2Q, and CSU will take over the +39.

4th and 2 coming up for CSU. Lobos get the stop. What a stand by the Lobos.

Lobos will start their drive at their 23. First play is a sack for the CSU defense. Lobos offense needs to wake up soon. Not much to do on the first couple of plays of the drive for the Lobos, but Layne finds Bankston for the first down pass play to keep the drive alive. Layne find Johnson for the first down pick up on a 3rd and 7. Running QB Jack Layne picks up the first down. Layne finds a wide open Johnson for a 25 yard pass play. McKinney with the score.

6:17 2Q: Lobos 7 CSU 0. Great drive for the Lobos, with some massive 3rd down pick ups. To put that drive together after the massive stops on 3rd and 1 and 4th and 2 on the last series after the TO.

CSU will start at the 26. Nothing doing for the Lobos on the drive. Lobos will get the ball. CSU tried to play it off that a Lobos player touch that ball, one official bought it, to bad their review if you’re a CSU fan.

Lobos drive will start at their 14. Not much doing for the Lobos on the first couple of plays to set up a 3rd and 6. Lobos will have punt after an incompletion. Lobos with a good punt that will have CSU with the ball at their 26.

3:37 2Q: Lobos 7 CSU 0. Lobos get the stop on 3rd down, but a facemask keeps the drive alive for CSU. Lobos force another 3rd and 5, which is coming up after the 2 minutes TO. Pass breakup and the Lobos will get the ball back with 1:46 left.

Halftime: Lobos 10 CSU 0. Lobos with 213 yards of offense compared to 68 for CSU. CSU will receive the second half kickoff.

Kickoff goes into the end zone, and CSU will start their first drive of the 2H at their 25. What a pick by Austin Brawley. Lobos will have the ball at the +42.

Lobos with a big 3rd down pick up as Layne finds Johnson for the first down. second fumble of the game by Bankston, CSU will take over at their 15.

10:04 3Q: Lobos 10 CSU 0. CSU will use their first TO of the 2H with a 3rd and 6 coming up. Lobos with the stop and the CSU punt unit is back out there.

We have another review coming up, after the Lobos have another fumble. It would be the third lost fumble of the game. Clearly a fumble. Incredible how the ball is just coming out today. Can the defense hold them to 3 points?

CSU takes full advantage of the turnover to make it 10-7 Lobos.

7:32 3Q: Lobos 10 CSU 7.

Way too many fumbles, drops, and penalties for the Lobos today. They should be up way more than 10-7, but they have shot themselves in the foot way too many times so far today.

Lobos will have the ball at their 25. Layne finds DT for the big gain. Just missed a couple of massive pass plays, but the Lobos will have to punt again. On the bright side they didn’t fumble the ball. Punt goes into the end zone for a touchback.

CSU will have the ball at their 20. Big 3rd down pick up by CSU. Eck and Combs with a massive sack for the Lobos, setting up a 3rd and 18 for CSU. CSU picks up the first down. KJN with a massive sack to set the CSU set of downs back. CSU kicks the field goal to tie the game at 10.

:18 3Q: Lobos 10 CSU 10.

Lobos with another fumble, 3rd of the quarter and 4th of the game. CSU has the ball in + field position looking for the lead. The Lobos can’t avoid shooting themselves in the foot.

Massive 3rd and 3 coming up for CSU. That was a very nice spot CSU got for the first down. Looked like he was well short. Austin Brawley with his second pick of the game, and the Lobos will have the ball at the +21. Make them pay.

Lobos will have a 4th and 1 from the 11. Jack LAYNE with the fake and takes it to the house.

10:32 4Q: Lobos 17 CSU 10. Massive turn of events in this game. Looked like the Lobos were sinking and the pick and 4th down TD has things buzzing in ABQ. Now the Lobos defense just need to keep doing their thing.

CSU will have the ball at the 25. Coleman with a pick for the Lobos, third of the day for the defense and the Lobos will have the ball at the +20. WILD and WEIRD game happening in ABQ.

Nothing doing for the Lobos offense, but the Lobos will make the FG to extend the lead.

8:27 4Q: Lobos 20 CSU 10.

CSU will start their drive at their 25. Lobos are looking for another strong defensive stand. Great catch by Beers, and we will have another review for targeting. That wasn’t a targeting call. CSU breaks one for a TD.

5:09 4Q: Lobos 20 CSU 17.

Lobos will start their drive at their 25. CSU only has 1 TO remaining. The Lobos have picked up first downs, and we should be seeing the end of the insane streak.

5 seconds left. CSU has the ball at their 33. Lobos call their last TO of the game up 20-17.

FINAL: Lobos 20 CSU 17. THE STREAK IS OVER!!! Lobos move to 7-3 and 4-2 in MW Play.
