Zach’s Running Blog: Lobos vs. Central Michigan Football 9/5/26

We have finally hit the Season Opener for the New Mexico Lobos, coming off a great first season of the Jason Eck Era. The Lobos start the season off with plenty of expectations and have their first realistic shot at making the College Football Playoff (a long shot, but there is a shot). We will see who will get the start for the Lobos at QB1 and how the snaps unfold between the three QBs that were in the QB competition during Fall Camp after last year’s QB1 Jack Layne was ruled out for the season with an arm injury. I haven’t been able to get a good look at the team so far this year, due to work starting the same week Fall Camp started. Central Michigan will be a good first test for the Lobos this season, and the schedule to open the year is interesting as they start the year with this matchup, following up with a home buy game, and a road buy game with two completely different expectations for those games. We will have more things coming after this game, but as always we will have this running Blog that will be updated during the game, and of course we will be providing updates on Twitter and Bluesky. Here’s to a fun season with a lot of memories.

The game has been shifted to an 8:15 PM start time due to TV. It looks like the game will be starting on FS2 as Texas Tech and ACU finishes up on FS1.

CMU wins the toss and will defer to the second half. Meaning the Lobos will revel who will be getting the start at QB very soon. Good size crowd with more people coming in for the Season Opener.

Lobos will start their first drive of the season at the 25 with Toa Fa’avae getting the start. 3 and out for the Lobos on the first series of the season, they were able to pick up 5 yards on the possession but nothing else.

CMU will start their first drive of the game with the ball at the 32. Lobos defense with a couple of nice stops on run plays. A massive sack for the Lobos ends the CMU drive. CMU’s punt has the Lobos with the ball at the 22.

Toa with a massive rush after escaping presser on the 3rd and 10. Great play call gives the Lobos at the +31 on the first completion of the season. CMU forces a fumble on but the Lobos were able to jump on the ball to keep the drive alive inside the red zone. Humphrey with the first score of the season and game for the Lobos. Lobos take the early 7-0 lead.

7:18 1Q: Lobos 7 CMU 0.

CMU will start their second drive of the game at the 25. Lobos defense has come to play early in this one. Lobos defense force back-2-back 3 and outs for the CMU’s offense to start the game. That was an electric return to set the Lobos at the 36.

5:37 1Q: Lobos 7 CMU 0.

Luke Moga will get the next series (probably the next 2). Lobos get to 4th and 1 and with Eck you know they are going for it. James Laubstein with the run for the first down pick up. Great catch by Omeire for his first catch as a Lobo on the pass from Moga.

End of 1Q: Lobos 7 CMU 0.  Lobos are driving and will have a 2nd and 7 from the 14 to start the 2Q. Lobos have received good moments from each of the 3 QBs, pop from the RBs, and they are controlling both lines after the first 15 minutes. Keith with the strong catch to set the Lobos up with a first and goal from the 6. TOUCHDOWN Lobos!!! Laubstein with the keeper to give the Lobos a 14-0 lead.

12:56 2Q: Lobos 14 CMU 0. Great first 18 minutes of the season for the Lobos.

CMU will start their next drive at the 25. Nothing doing for the CMU offense again. 3 drives and 3 3 and outs for the Lobos defense. Impressive stuff from the Lobos.

Lobos drive will start at the 36 with Moga at QB. 9 yard pick up on the pass play to start the drive for the Lobos. Drive will stay alive with the holding on the pass play by CMU. Glasgow with a 48 yarder to make it 17-0 Lobos.

8:19 2Q: Lobos 17 CMU 0.

CMU will start their drive at the 25 again trailing 17-0. Another drive with nothing happening for the CMU offense. A great punt for CMU put the ball at the 11 for the Lobos next drive.

7:14 2Q: Lobos 17 CMU 0. Looks like Toa will be back in at QB for the Lobos. Sloppy penalties by CMU has the Lobos with the ball inside the 35 with 2 minutes to go in the half. IT’s GOOD!!! Glasgow with a 46 yarder to make it 20-0 Lobos.

1:04 2Q: Lobos 20 CMU 0.

CMU will start their drive at the 25 with all 3 time outs remaining. They will also receive the 2nd half kickoff. CMU picks up their first 1st down of the game with 46 seconds left in the half. CMU picks up a couple of first downs but the Lobos are able to get the INT to end the drive for CMU. Lobos will have 26 seconds left with 2 TOs.

Toa sets up the Lobos for a long field goal attempt, but Glasgow just misses the 50 yard FGA.

Halftime: Lobos 20 CMU 0. CMU will receive the 2H kickoff.

CMU will start the 3Q at the 25. CMU is able to move the ball but the drive stalls after a false start on a new set of downs, Lobos force the CMU punt which goes into the end zone.

11:35 3Q: Lobos 20 CMU 0. Lobos will start with the ball at the 20 for their first drive of the 3Q. Lobos moving the ball down the field with some help from CMU penalties.
