Saturday’s 40-21 loss to the University of Tulsa was certainly a hard pill for a lot of Lobo fans to swallow. It was billed as an important game, one that could ultimate define the course of the season. So from that, I decided to look into how much this game affected UNM’s chances of becoming bowl-eligible (i.e., winning at least 6 games).
UNM at LMU Game Preview
New Mexico is coming off a 1-0 overtime win at CS Northridge, where Chris Wehan found the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 96th minute. The win was the Lobos first shutout of the season, as they got great play out of their defense, and the two teams played on even terms most of the game. The Lobos need to build off this defensive effort tonight when they face a nationally-ranked LMU team. This LMU team has started out their season the best possible way, going 5-0-0 over their first 5 matches and out-scoring their opposition 8-2. Both of those two goals were allowed on Friday in their 3-2 win at CSU Bakersfield.
Tulsa, UNM Gang Up to Beat the Lobos
UNM faced its first real test of the season, matching up against the visiting University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane, and it… well, things could have gone better. In a game that was expected to be defined by a lot of scoring and offense, only Tulsa really lived up to that expectation. Tulsa put up 40 points on 600 yards of offense, coming pretty evenly on the ground and through the air. The Lobos, on the other hand, only managed 21 points from their 390 yards. With the game not being a shootout, it was instead defined by something else.
UNM AT CS Northridge Game Preview
New Mexico (1-1-1) AT CS Northridge (1-2-0)
Coming off a week where they went 1-0-1 against two very good sides, the Lobo Men’s Soccer team heads to California to take on CS Northridge and Loyola Marymount University. Friday night, the Lobos will be in Northridge to take on CS Northridge in a rematch of last year’s 1-0 road victory for the Lobos, with the goal coming from, surprise, surprise, Chris Wehan. Northridge is coming off a week of traveling to Omaha, Nebraska, where they lost both of their matches, losing 2-1 against #1 Creighton and losing 4-1 against #21 Omaha.
Football Game 2 Preview: University of Tulsa
After blasting Mississippi Valley State 66-0 last weekend, the Lobos seem ready to face their first real challenge in Tulsa. By all accounts, this might be the game that warrants a third digit on the scoreboard…
Some Thoughts on Basketball Recruiting
The Recruiting Period has started for NCAA Men’s Basketball, which means coaches are able to have in-home visits and school visits for potential recruits. Recruiting can be a complicated time for coaches, players, and those that follow recruiting. While we here at Lobo Lane won’t focus on recruiting until a player is actually signed, we do still have some general thoughts about the process. So here are few things we (sometimes unsuccessfully) keep in mind while following basketball recruiting.
Weekly Round-up (9/8/15)
This is our weekly round-up which will look at what happened in Lobo Sports in the last week and look ahead to the games and events that the week ahead will have for Lobo Sports.
Grange & Ashwill Memorial Recap
This weekend at the Grange & Ashwill Memorial Invitational, New Mexico Men’s Soccer played host to two nationally ranked teams in University of San Diego and UC Santa Barbara. While the results weren’t exactly what the Lobos were looking for, the Lobos got results in both games, going 1-0-1 on the weekend. That will be key later in the season for seeding in the NCAA Tournament, so the Lobos can feel like that had a good weekend. And they almost had themselves a great weekend, especially given that they were without the services of defender Yuri Dominciano, who has yet to play this year, and forward Sam Gleadle, who was out of action this weekend. Thankfully, both players should also be a go this weekend’s trip to California.
UNM Men’s Soccer vs. UC Santa Barbara Game Preview
The Lobos (0-1-1) return to action tonight, as they take on #13 UCSB (1-0-1) in the final game of the Grange & Ashwill Memorial Invitational. Friday’s action in the tournament was exciting and lead to two 2-2 draws. In their game against Denver, UCSB came back and tied the game late with a goal from Nick DePuy in the 78th minute. For the Lobos, two goals by Chris Wehan was not enough, as they gave up the game tying goal in the 82nd minute against San Diego. It will be interesting to see if those results have any lingering effects going into this match. These two teams did not face each other last season, but did play a thrilling match two years ago, when Niko Hansen scored with less than 20 seconds left to give the Lobos a 1-0 win.
Football Game 1 Recap: Lobos beat the Delta Devils 66-0
The Lobos opened their 2015 season with a dominating performance against Mississippi Valley State University, completely overpowering the Delta Devils in their 66-0 victory, making my 63-14 prediction seem downright pessimistic. While the outcome was expected, it was still encouraging to see how well both the offense and defense played. The offense scored eight touchdowns (all on the ground), racked up over 500 yards, and didn’t have a single turnover. The defense not only pitched a shutout, they held MVSU to 74 yards of offense, forced three turnovers, and only gave up one play for more than 15 yards. They even returned an interception for a touchdown, for good measure. All in all, it was a very satisfying win that will give the team confidence as they begin to start playing FBS teams next week.
