The Lobo Women’s Basketball Program looks to build off of last year’s very encouraging season that saw the Lobos finish the season 21-13 overall and 14-4 in Mountain West Play. The Lobos ended up making the Mountain West Tournament Final and making the second round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational. With such a great turnaround, Coach Sanchez was awarded a contract extension as she tries to get the program back to where it was in the early 2000’s. This program is on the rise with a talented roster and recruiting keeps on getting better, I am excited for this season and do think this team has good shot to win the Mountain West.

Men’s Basketball vs. Texas Southern Preview
After a couple of exhibition wins against D-II competition, the UNM men’s basketball team is ready to get to work, starting Friday night against Texas Southern University. After a disappointing season last year, the Lobos are ready to show that is all behind them and they’re back to where they want to be. Texas Southern is no D-II team, however, having scored some big road upsets last season and making the NCAA Tournament two years in a row. The Lobos will have to be ready for a fight, or they could be the Tigers’ next victim.
Men’s Basketball: Rogers State Game Thoughts
The Lobos played their last exhibition game of the season Friday night against Rogers State, and while it is hard to get a feel of rotations and how improved players are over last year, here are some of my observations from the Rogers State game.
Women’s Basketball vs NMHU Preview
After a convincing, comfortable win against Western New Mexico in their first exhibition game, the Lobos will put the finishing touches on their preseason by hosting New Mexico Highlands. The first game was a great coming-out party for the freshmen and also was a good display of the level of talent that this team has from top to bottom. This game should be more of the same, mostly serving as a great chance to get to know the entire roster.
Men’s Basketball vs. Rogers State Preview
After a not-as-comfortable-as-we-hoped win against CSU-Pueblo, the Lobos return to action Friday for another exhibition game, this time against Rogers State. The D-II Hillcats are coming off of a game against future UNM opponent Oral Roberts where they hung tight with the Golden Eagles for most of the game before eventually falling 82-74, meaning that the Lobos weren’t the only ones with a less-than-stellar opener against a lower division team. That also means that the Lobos need to be ready, as the Hillcats are going to come in thinking that they can pull out a victory.
Men’s Basketball vs. CSU Pueblo Game Thoughts
Lobo Men’s Basketball kicked off their season with an exhibition against CSU-Pueblo in a game the Lobos ended up winning 96-84. Exhibitions are always hard to really take anything out of for a few reasons such as different rotations, no scouting, and different styles of play. I won’t focus too much on the actual game, but instead focus on some observations that I picked up on during the game.
Women’s Basketball vs. WNMU Game Preview
After being nice and allowing the men’s team to play their exhibition first, the Lady Lobos start their season tonight with an exhibition game against Western New Mexico. This is the first time these two teams have ever played, which is kind of amazing in its own right, so we’ll be able to see something tonight that we’ve never seen before.
Men’s Basketball vs. CSU-Pueblo Preview
There’s an old Rogers Hornsby quote that says, “People ask me what I do in the winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.” In general, Lobo fans are exactly the same way about basketball. Finally, the window-staring is over, as the Lobos play in the Pit for the first time in almost eight months tomorrow in an exhibition game versus CSU-Pueblo.
Men’s Basketball Preview: Mountain West Conference Preview
So far in our preview of the UNM Men’s Basketball season, we’ve focused entirely on the Lobos, including a look at the guards and wings, a look at the bigs and walk-ons, and some general thoughts about the season. So, today we’ll take a quick look at the Mountain West Conference as a whole. This year, as much as any in recent memory, the conference seems pretty much up for grabs, so we should be in for an exciting year.
Men’s Basketball Preview: Scattered Preseason Thoughts
After spending the last couple of days looking at all of the players on this year’s Lobo Men’s Basketball Team, starting with the guards and wings then looking at the bigs and walk-ons, today we’ll cover a few other things that popped into my head when I was thinking about the upcoming season…
