After facing a defensive-minded Missouri State side Friday night that was looking for a 0-0 draw, the Lobos will play a team with a very different philosophy in the American University Eagles. Both teams are coming off 1-0 wins Friday and both sides have very strong starts to their seasons. With both sides winning their first match, this will effectively be the championship match of the TLC Pluming & Utility Invitational. Of course, because this was an invitational instead of a tournament, all of the matches were already in place. It’s nice it worked out that way.
UNM Scorched by the Sun Devils
UNM came into Tempe last night to face ASU as longshots to win, but also with the knowledge that ASU was not unbeatable and that a win would bring an excitement about the program that hasn’t been seen for the better part of a decade. They came out hard, showing the ability to move the ball and the ability to stop the Sun Devils. Unfortunately, the talent difference ended up being just too much for the Lobos to make up, as they lost 34-10 to drop to 1-2 on the season. However, their effort left me feeling a lot more confident about the season than I was before last night.
Weekly Roundup (9/18/15)
This is our weekly round up which will look at what happened in Lobo Sports in the last week and look ahead to the games and events that the week ahead will have for Lobo Sports. This will not be game previews or game recaps instead it will look at awards awarded to Lobo players, the outcome of games, as well as giving you a one post location for the week ahead.
Friendly Confines
Beginning tonight, the UNM Women’s Volleyball team returns to the friendly confines of home…well, almost. They will be playing at “The Pit” (Wise Pies Arena) for the Days Inn & Suites Lobo Invitational and will be hosting Cal State Northridge, LIU Brooklyn, and LSU. The Lobo volleyball team currently owns a 5-4 record but have played an incredibly challenging non-conference schedule. Last weekend, that challenge included a hard fought three set loss to the nation’s third-ranked Southern California Women of Troy (USC). While UNM will bring the best record of all four teams into the tournament this weekend, the three other schools that they are hosting have also all played more than one ranked opponent, so this weekend of volleyball should be highly competitive as all four teams want to improve on the results that they have had thus far.
UNM vs Missouri State Game Preview
After going 2-0-0 last weekend in California, the Lobo Men’s Soccer team returns home to host the TLC Plumbing & Utility Invitational, where it will face Missouri State on Friday night at 7pm and face #21 American on Sunday at 6pm. Last Sunday’s opponent LMU rounds out the field, also playing Missouri State and American this weekend. This is a very important weekend for the Lobos, as they have a three match win streak on the line and start Conference USA play next week. If the Lobos can find wins in both matches, they could climb into the top 10 next week and could build the momentum to start strong in conference play.
Football Game 3 Preview: Arizona State
After a disappointing loss to Tulsa last week, the Lobos look to bounce back on the road against ASU on Friday night. This is one of the two toughest games the Lobos will play this season, and an upset victory would make everyone forget about last weekend.
SDSU Possible Rules Violations: Why it is bad for Lobo basketball
It was announced on Tuesday September 15th by Gary Parrish of CBS Sports that the NCAA has launched an investigation on the San Diego State University Men’s Basketball program. At this point, Parrish reports that the investigation hasn’t become a formal investigation, which means that NCAA isn’t working with SDSU right now with the investigation, but are instead doing the ground work for a potential investigation. I want to make it clear that this post isn’t trying to point fingers at SDSU, but is instead looking at how this will potentially affect and hurt the Lobos men’s basketball program and the other Mountain West basketball programs. We don’t know what sort of timeframe will be involved with this investigation, the penalties (if there are any), and how long those possible penalties will last. This is huge news for Mountain West basketball fans and it shouldn’t be taken lightly, as it isn’t good for the conference as a whole.
Men’s Soccer California Weekend Recap
The business trip to California was a success, as the Lobos Men’s Soccer team had its most successful weekend of the season, going 2-0-0 again Cal State Northridge and nationally-ranked Loyola Marymount University. It was an important weekend to get results and build off of last week’s games against University of San Diego and UC Santa Barbara. The Lobos did just that and saw their success be rewarded by becoming nationally ranked in all three of the National Rankings. They are now currently ranked 17th in the NSCAA Coaches poll, 15th in the Top Drawer Soccer poll, and 23rd in the College Soccer News poll.
How the Tulsa Loss Affects UNM’s Bowl Eligibility Chances
Saturday’s 40-21 loss to the University of Tulsa was certainly a hard pill for a lot of Lobo fans to swallow. It was billed as an important game, one that could ultimate define the course of the season. So from that, I decided to look into how much this game affected UNM’s chances of becoming bowl-eligible (i.e., winning at least 6 games).
UNM at LMU Game Preview
New Mexico is coming off a 1-0 overtime win at CS Northridge, where Chris Wehan found the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 96th minute. The win was the Lobos first shutout of the season, as they got great play out of their defense, and the two teams played on even terms most of the game. The Lobos need to build off this defensive effort tonight when they face a nationally-ranked LMU team. This LMU team has started out their season the best possible way, going 5-0-0 over their first 5 matches and out-scoring their opposition 8-2. Both of those two goals were allowed on Friday in their 3-2 win at CSU Bakersfield.
